Sen. Proos encourages area anglers to participate this weekend

LANSING, Mich. — Free fishing this weekend! Sen. John Proos is reminding residents that the state’s annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12.

“Michigan’s Summer Free Fishing Weekend provides an outstanding opportunity for families to introduce the joy of fishing to children or to just get away from the stress of life and relax in the Michigan outdoors,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “I encourage Southwest Michigan anglers — and those who have never gone fishing — to take advantage of this annual celebration of one of Michigan’s premier outdoor activities this weekend.”

During the weekend, all fishing license fees will be waived, but all fishing regulations still apply.

“This tradition is an excellent time for Southwest Michigan families and out-of-state visitors to enjoy some of the world’s best fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters — free of charge,” Proos said. “For 30 years, the free fishing weekend has highlighted our wonderful water resources and helped families pass down the love of fishing to the next generation.”

Proos noted that Michigan has more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 36,000 miles of rivers and 11,000 inland lakes for fishing enthusiasts to visit this weekend.

To encourage involvement in the free fishing weekend, organized activities are being scheduled in communities across the state. Activities are coordinated by a variety of organizations, including local and state parks, constituent groups, schools, businesses and others.
