LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Judy Emmons will be the keynote speaker at an event on Saturday to benefit survivors of human trafficking and recognize individuals for their efforts in stopping trafficking in Michigan.

“Michigan is taking a leading role in ending human trafficking, yet the most direct impact on helping survivors of this modern-day slavery is being made in our local communities by real-life angels,” said Emmons, R-Sheridan. “I am honored to be one of those asked to help recognize the true champions of hope and change. They are the ones who are shining the light on a crime that devastates thousands of lives every year and who are on the front lines reaching out to trafficking survivors.”

Emmons is sponsoring the event with the Institute on Human Trafficking Education, which encourages and supports charitable and community projects that promote the prevention of human trafficking through education, training and resources.

The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Burton Manor Banquet and Conference Center, 27777 Schoolcraft Road in Livonia.

Among the organizations to benefit from donations received during the event is Claire’s House, a 27-bed facility that will be located in the Detroit area for survivors of human trafficking.

“Claire’s House will be the first location of its kind in Michigan, housing women and children who have been trafficked,” Emmons said. “It will offer counseling, teaching of new skills and assistance in readapting into normal life. We spend much of our time and effort increasing awareness — and that is critically important. However, we also must help survivors recover from the hell they’ve experienced so that they can enjoy a productive and fulfilling life.”

Donations are encouraged. Items needed include new twin- or full-sized sheets, pillows, towels, non-perishable foods, travel-sized hygiene products and teddy bears for the children.
