LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Judy Emmons was recently honored as a 2015 Elected Women of Excellence Award winner by the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) at their Celebration of Excellent Women ceremony in Alexandria, Virginia.

The award was created to identify women who have worked tirelessly, often breaking down barriers and overcoming obstacles that once seemed insurmountable, to serve their communities.

“I am deeply and truly honored to receive this award in recognition of our efforts to improve the lives of women, and specifically to protect them from the horrors of human trafficking,” said Emmons, R-Sheridan. “I am proud to be one of just four women in the Michigan Senate, and I hope that the success my female colleagues and I are having will encourage more women to consider entering public service.”

Award winners were nominated by their colleagues and constituents from their home states and then chosen by a distinguished panel of NFWL members.

“Part of the spirit of NFWL is that we take time to recognize the significant achievements of the women around us, and we are delighted to recognize this year’s honorees,” said Delaware Rep. Helene Keeley, the chair-elect of the NFWL. “We celebrate the resilient leadership qualities, focused work ethic and determination these women have and look forward to sharing their future successes.”

Through annual educational and networking events, the National Foundation for Women Legislators supports elected women from all levels of governance. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, NFWL serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience. To learn more about NFWL, visit www.womenlegislators.org.
