LANSING – Michigan is holding its own in the Midwest as more people relocate to the state for jobs, according to a recent study by Atlas Van Lines.

As most of the Midwest continued to lose residents last year, the moving company identified Michigan as one of only three “balanced” states in the region, defined as states where inbound and outbound moves each represented 55 percent or less of the total.

“This is very good news. It’s one more sign that Michigan’s economy is rebounding and that our work to help put our state back on the right track is succeeding,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “This report shows that Michigan’s six-year run as an ‘outbound’ state is over. The tide is turning from Michigan being a state that people leave to one that attracts workers and job creators, and that is important to long-term economic recovery.”

The announcement comes after state fiscal leaders and economists from across Michigan reported positive economic news and projections at the state’s annual January Revenue Estimating Conference at the Capitol.

“Job growth in Michigan is outpacing the national average, unemployment is the lowest in more than three and a half years, and the state added jobs last year for the first time in more than a decade,” Proos said. “Those facts, in addition to the Atlas Van Lines study, are strong indicators of economic revitalization. I am proud of the progress we’ve made, and I am dedicated to continuing to improve the Southwest Michigan economy and create good jobs for Michigan workers.”
