(LANSING, MI) – Today State Sen. Patrick Colbeck’s (R-Canton) resolutions urging prioritization of the I-275 project and asking the United States Congress and U.S. Department of Transportation to approve a federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant to reconfigure the I-275/Ford Road interchange passed the Senate. Senate Resolution 93 (SR 93) will now be transmitted to federal government officials and Senate Concurrent Resolution 19 (SCR 19) will go to the House for consideration.
Copies of SR 19 will be transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the members of the Michigan congressional delegation, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
In addition to fostering economic development in the region, this project addresses the top two most dangerous stretches of road in the state, Ford Rd. between Lilley Rd. and Ikea Dr. and Ford Rd. between Haggerty Rd. and the south I-275 ramp.
“I would like to thank my colleagues in the Senate for supporting these two resolutions urging Congress and the U.S. Department of Transportation to approve a TIGER grant for this project,” Colbeck said.
“The I-275/Ford Road interchange area is the most dangerous stretch of road in our state,” said Colbeck. “It’s important to note though, that the merits of this project go well beyond increased safety. This project is critical to the continued economic development of western Wayne County and will benefit the entire region, including Aerotropolis.”
“As we witnessed last week when the Senate Transportation Committee held a hearing in Canton on my resolutions, this project enjoys overwhelming support from local leaders and the surrounding community, not just for the improvements we will see from behind the wheel, but also for its economic impact. The project itself will create more than 200 construction jobs and upon completion the reconfiguration will encourage increased economic development, creating more jobs in the area,” Colbeck concluded.
