LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton, released the following statement on Tuesday after testifying in support of Senate Concurrent Resolution 22 at the Senate Government Operations Committee hearing:

“The first role of government is to secure the rights of the governed. That’s why I testified in support of Senate Concurrent Resolution 22.

“Michigan has been and always will be a welcoming state for those escaping war and oppression. But it is clear that the resettlement process for Syrian refugees is a pathway for terrorists to enter our country and the state. It is irresponsible to allow policies to remain in place that put our citizens in danger.

“The fact of the matter is, the center of gravity for ISIS is Syria. ISIS has repeatedly demonstrated hatred for America.

“SCR 22 could be used as a means to influence politicians in D.C. This could be a catalyst to federal officials to support measures that will keep terrorists from entering our nation.

“America has been and will always be a nation of immigrants. I don’t want to stop immigration altogether, I want to address the security risks that threaten America under existing policy. I want to make sure that people coming here want to be American.

“SCR 22 makes it clear that we will not allow the Federal government to put our citizens at risk without voicing our objections.

“We need to support SCR 22 before it’s too late to stop ISIS and other terrorists from entering our country. I urge my colleagues to join me in this important effort.”

SCR 22 is a non-binding resolution to urge Gov. Snyder to maintain his current position on the relocation of Syrian refugees.
