LANSING, Mich. – During a special presentation today in the Michigan Senate, Sen. Patrick Colbeck presented a state flag that had been flown over the Capitol to Cmdr. Michael Wohnhaas of the U.S. Navy Littoral Class Combat Ship – USS Detroit.

Cmdr. Wohnhaas thanked the Senator for the flag saying, “This will fly over the ship with honor.”

The sixth ship of the U.S. Navy to be named after the City of Detroit, the USS Detroit will be a Freedom Class vessel of the U.S. naval fleet.

“Detroit and Michigan as a whole are proud to have such a beautiful new ship named after our city,” said Colbeck, R-Canton. “Commander Wohnhaas is a great choice to take the helm and I know he will command the ship and her crew with skill and expertise.”

The official crest of the USS Detroit was unveiled on Feb. 21, 2014, at dual ceremonies held in San Diego and Detroit.

“Our crest pays tribute to the great city of Detroit and the ship and crew that bear its name,” Wohnhaas said during ceremonies held at the San Diego Naval Station, the homeport for the ship when she joins the fleet in 2016. “None of this would be possible without the talents of a number of our first class petty officers, whose ideas will live on in the crest long after we’ve departed for other commands.”

A Littoral Combat Ship is a fast, agile, focused-mission platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation. It is designed to defeat asymmetric “anti-access” threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft.

The USS Detroit will be commissioned in 2016 and then sail to her homeport of San Diego.
