LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Patrick Colbeck and the Michigan Senate on Thursday hosted a special ceremony honoring members of our military from Michigan who have lost their lives during the past year.

“I am blessed to have had the opportunity to join my colleagues today in honoring the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Colbeck, R-Canton. “And those who give their lives in defense of our freedoms leave behind family members who will forever be touched by their loss. It was truly humbling to have the opportunity to show these families our gratitude.”

Today’s ceremony was the 21st Annual Memorial Day Service, which honors the fallen soldiers, as well as the families who lost loved ones. The Michigan Senate first held the Memorial Day Service at the initiative of former U.S. Congressman Mike Rogers, who was then a state senator.

Colbeck said he has a special appreciation for the members of our military and is proud to help out Michigan’s veterans and active military members. The senator serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on State Police and Military Affairs, and is a co-founder and board member for the Freedom Center hospitality center at Metro Airport and the Troy Military Entrance Processing Station.

“This weekend we will extend the solemn observance of Memorial Day beyond the confines of the Senate floor into the homes, churches, parades and cemeteries throughout our great state,” added Colbeck. “Memorial Day is a day for each of us who have been blessed through these sacrifices to dedicate some small measure of our time to honor our fallen heroes.

“There is no greater love than to lay one’s life down on behalf of a friend. Whether we know them personally or not, our freedom is a tribute to many such friends throughout the history of this great nation. We thank God for such friends and humbly ask that we honor their sacrifices through the lives that we lead.”
