Rocca scores perfect voting record

LANSING—Over the course of Michigan’s 96th Legislature—which just concluded its two-year run in December—1,912 roll call votes were taken in the Michigan Senate. Sen. Tory Rocca made sure he cast a vote on every single one of them.

“The residents of my district expect me to be at work, doing my job, and I’ve always considered it an honor and a privilege to do it,” said Rocca, R-Sterling Heights. “I take this responsibility very seriously. The men and women I represent work hard at their jobs, and they deserve nothing less from their elected representatives.”

During the 96th Legislature, which ran from January 2011 through December 2012, Rocca and Sen. Joe Hune, R-Hamburg, were the only senators with a perfect voting record for the entire term.

“Voting in the Senate chamber is one of the most important parts of my job,” Rocca said. “When legislators repeatedly miss votes, the residents of their district aren’t being represented, and that’s just wrong.”

Some lawmakers missed hundreds of votes during the 2011-2012 session.

“I hope all of my colleagues in the Legislature will take this responsibility seriously, and I have supported legislation to dock the pay of legislators who miss votes,” Rocca said.

LANSING—Residents of the 10th state Senate District looking for a free tax preparation reference can obtain a copy of the latest Michigan Taxpayer’s Guide through Sen. Tory Rocca’s website.

The guide, which is a reference for the 2011 tax year, is designed to help residents prepare their tax forms.

“It is important to be accurate and thorough when filling out a tax return,” said Rocca, R-Sterling Heights. “This is not always easy, since the tax laws change every year. The Michigan Taxpayer’s Guide is a valuable resource that will make this process easier. I am happy to offer it free to residents of the 10th District.”

The booklet contains information on Michigan’s taxes and tax credits. Included is a year-long taxpayer’s calendar with reference to important tax dates and filing deadlines. Also inside are copies of the most commonly used tax forms, as well as addresses and phone numbers for obtaining state agency tax information assistance.

Free copies of the tax guides are available on Rocca’s website at www.SenatorToryRocca.com.

Those without Internet access can obtain a free copy by contacting Rocca’s office at 517-373-7315.

Rocca works to protect senior citizens from abuse

LANSING, Mich.—Legislation introduced by Sen. Tory Rocca that will protect Michigan’s senior citizens and strengthen penalties for those convicted of abusing them was approved by the Senate Families, Seniors and Human Services Committee this week.

“Too many of our vulnerable senior citizens suffer unconscionable acts of physical and financial abuse, and we are acting to stop it,” said Rocca, R-Sterling Heights, sponsor of Senate Bill 455. “These measures will better protect the elderly and increase penalties for the criminals who prey upon them.”

Rocca’s bill creates tough, new penalties for felonious embezzlement against a vulnerable adult. Criminals found guilty of that crime would be punished by up to 20 years in prison if the measure becomes law. The senior protection package also revises a prohibition against fraudulently obtaining a signature.

The abuse of elders is a problem that has affected nearly 80,000 senior citizens in Michigan.

Senate Bills 455, 459 and 465 now go to the full Senate for further consideration.

Senate committee approves Rocca legislation to establish Caylees Law in Michigan

LANSING, Mich.—A person failing to report to law enforcement that a child in their care has gone missing would face a felony of up to two years imprisonment under legislation approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee today.

Senate Bill 626, sponsored by state Sen. Tory Rocca, R-Sterling Heights, was introduced at the request of nearly 1,000 constituents who voiced support for the measure due to the Caylee Anthony case in Florida.

“The circumstances of Caylee Anthony’s disappearance were heart-breaking. It is unconscionable that anyone would wait 31 days to report the disappearance of a child, and we are acting to make sure a similar case does not happen here in Michigan,” said Rocca. “It is crucial that authorities are notified immediately in the life and death situation of a missing child, and this legislation affords more protection for our kids.”

Senate Bill 626 and Senate Bill 580, the companion legislation, now go to the full Senate for further consideration.

Senate approves Rocca legislation protecting public right to know

LANSING―Michigan residents will be better informed about public and legal notices under legislation approved by the state Senate on Wednesday.

Senate Bills 163 and 164, sponsored by Sen. Tory Rocca, ensure that the public will continue to have access to information about how the government is managing their issues, as traditional news media face a changing environment.

“Economic conditions and technological advances have changed the way news is reported and consumed, but the public still has a right to know what government officials are up to,” said Rocca, R-Sterling Heights. “With state and local budgets being strained, and dramatic changes coming to the way governments will have to operate, citizens need accurate, timely information more than ever.”

The bills revise state law to require that certain legal or procedural notices, such as land sales, be provided to the public, even in areas of the state where the local newspaper has gone out of business.

SBs 163 and 164, which received unanimous support, now go to the state House for consideration.
